One question I get asked repeatedly is: am I too old to start bodybuilding?
Well, the answer is no. It’s as simple as that.
I don’t need to know how old you are. I don’t need to know what ailments you have. I don’t need to know anything about your medical history – although if you have known heart issues, that’s an exception. I say this not out of arrogance, but out of belief based on proof that bodybuilding practices can be good for anybody.
Note: you should always check with your doctor before trying anything such as bodybuilding; and this goes for young people as well as old.
But anyway, sure, if you’re really advanced in years, you may find it that much more of a struggle to achieve a great physique, but look at it this way: most young people are in bad shape, and seeing an older person in great shape is almost unheard of. It’s all achievable and doesn’t take drugs or anything dangerous.
One reason why bodybuilding practices are so good for people of advancing years, is that it can really do wonders to improve mobility. As we get older, we become more susceptible to aches and pains – and even arthritis, which most of us will develop at some point in our lives.
But, by building up the muscles and strengthening the bones by putting pressure on them through weight training, you can alleviate those symptoms dramatically. And I’m not just saying this – it’s actually scientifically proven.
So, what advice could I give a senior interested in bodybuilding?
Well, the number one rule would be: don’t overdo it. It can be rigorous enough on a young person just starting out who has superior recuperation ability by default, and it’s even more rigorous on an older person.
You should start out slow, with light weights, for higher reps of around 10-12. Gradually you’ll build up strength and can progress onto heavier more challenging weights.
I highly advise you seek the guidance of a coach or somebody with experience, and as I say, seek the advice of your doctor before embarking on any bodybuilding training.
