Natural Bodybuilding Routines

If only everything in life was simple, we’d all know where everyone is coming from and know exactly where we ourselves stood. One of my pet peeves in this respect is the information being doled out on bodybuilding, particularly on the Internet.

The problem is, so much of it is written by people taking steroids (yet this is never mentioned either because they assumed it is an open secret you already know, or they are in denial) and the unsuspecting reader is misled into thinking the information is good to go for them yet the results they get will be marginal at best.

The truth is so much of the information out there simply will not work for the natural trainee. Unfortunately, the burden of deciding if a workout is going to work for the natural trainee is on us, so you’ll need to have a little understanding and a little research under your belt to know the score.

In this article I will not take you through any detailed natural bodybuilding routines, but I will explain some fundamental differences between natural bodybuilding routines and those which really will only work for those on steroids. My hope is, that I can educate you a little more on detecting bullshit and making smart choices and decisions when it comes to your training practices.

First, let me tell you a little bit about what steroids do. Steroids are a synthetic testosterone derivative injected or taken in pill form by a trainee and provide greatly enhanced recuperative and muscle building abilities. Therefore, if two trainees of identical genetics (okay, clones) started training on the same date - one using steroids and the other naturally - then the one using steroids will make much faster and greater progress in size and strength than the one going natural.

There are two main factors in determining which programs are suitable for those who are natural bodybuilding. They are: frequency of workouts (how many times a week) and volume (how many reps and sets).

Natural bodybuilders need a great deal more time to recover and grow than those who are on steroids. This usually means a training program for a natural bodybuilder will include several days rest per week, muscle groups being worked no more than once a week, and also limited numbers of sets (usually no more than five).

A person training on steroids can normally benefit from lifting more days a week, hitting the same muscle group more than once, and also using a greater volume of training to fatigue the muscle fibres even deeper - with less danger of overtraining. Of course it is possible to over train whilst using steroids, it but it is far less likely.

Therefore, the key things to look out in four natural bodybuilding routines – particularly for beginners - are programs which allow for several days in between hitting the same body parts directly, a few days rest per week to allow for full and systemic recovery, and programs which advocate no more than five to seven sets.

Also - bodybuilding routines which involve compound exercises primarily are always good for natural trainees to pack on the maximum amount of muscle. Such programs would normally include the bench press, squats and the dead lift, at the very least.
